该剧以“三线建设”为背景，讲述的就是上世纪六七十年代一场真实发生在西南十三省的战略大迁徙事件。该剧通过闻一达、梅湘云等三线建设者的工作生活，演绎了他们在那特殊的年代所经历的痛苦和欢乐、豪情与浪漫，讴歌了两代三线建设者献身大西北的奉献精神。
