讲述的是一位年轻的电工单忠祥为照顾重病卧床的母亲，只能留在日寇占领区。他原本打算上山参加抗联打鬼子，可是由于姐姐在学校参加了进步学生组织反对日本帝国主义的侵略，暴露了身份不能留在城里，他为了照顾年迈的母亲，只好忍气吞声留了下来，目睹着日军对同胞的杀戮，他奋起反抗，在日军占领区，为侵略者制造了很多麻烦。处置了卖国投敌的汉奸，为国人拍手称快。在他的反抗中，得到了中共地下党刘化勇的暗中协助，并逐步帮助单忠祥认识到个人反抗的局限性。最后使他完成了自发到自觉的转变。
