本片在吸取民间传说、演义故事以及传统精粹的基础上，选取新的审美视角，在勾勒北汉、北宋及辽国间尖锐复杂的战争历史背景下，着重描写了杨家将在几十年漫长岁月中的悲欢离合、荣辱兴衰，生动地再现了杨家将祖孙几代的男英女杰们的一系列生生死死、恩恩怨怨的传奇故事。
