建筑设备机械厂职工韩素云是一个普通的家庭妇女,她跟丈夫李梦林一道,赡养着年迈的婆母,抚养着李梦林跟前妻生下的女儿兰兰,后来由于李梦林前妻生活在乡下的父母因年老多病无人照顾,韩素云遂将二老接回家中,当做自己的父母奉养。建筑设备机械厂因资不抵债倒闭,身为副厂长的李梦林发现厂里有一笔款子下落不明,遂和几个中层领导一道,将现任厂长罗田告到审纪部门。但正当审纪部门来调查罗田的经济问题时,罗田因与李梦林争吵突发脑溢血。罗田的父母得知儿子患病之后,苦痛交夹,罗父遂发中风,罗母决计要为儿子讨回公道,遂一纸诉状,以伤害罪将李梦林告上法庭。因罗田的经济问题一时查无实据,且罗田中风与李梦林有关,法院依据法律,将李梦林判刑两年。平时就与罗田关系紧张的妻子刘贞,得知丈夫生病之后,由于忙于工作,将躺在医院里的丈夫及照顾罗田父母和女儿甜甜的责任,全部推到李家。而跟李梦林一块起事的其他几人,也因事情棘手,变相退出。面对家庭的突然变故,韩素云毫无怨言地承担起了照看三个家庭的重任,她一边照顾着五个老人,一边督促着李梦林的女
