本剧是叙述日本南北朝时代分裂为两个皇朝的战乱故事。吉川英治的原作原本是描述鎌仓时代、足利尊氏举兵到鎌仓幕府灭亡、建武新政、南北朝动乱，最後写到尊氏之死。但是在本剧後半有关观应的扰乱等故事，则是吉川原作没有的创作。
魁拔纪元1664年，天神经过精确测算后，在第六代魁拔苏醒前一刻，对其进行了一次核武级打击。但谁都没有想到，已经悄然实现了自身进化的新一代魁拔，成功地逃脱了致命一击……
