故事起于神话，火龙神投胎于朱家，家人取名重八，即是后来的朱元璋（何家劲 饰），千年龟转世为陈友谅（李志希 饰），两人都爱上了小师妹佩瑶（天心 饰）。佩瑶虽心系重八，但是却因为中了陈友谅的计谋而嫁给了他。而重八邂逅了元朝的明霞郡主（杨丽菁 饰），郡主对他一往情深两人真心相爱了，但却由于身份的悬殊而不能在一起。朱重八遇到了马秀英（苏忆菁 饰），依靠马家军的力量与陈友谅的队伍共同抗击元朝残余势力。最后靠着身边的大将徐达（宋达民 饰）、常遇春（丁仰国 饰）的帮助，朱重八取得了最后胜利，赢迎娶了马秀英，而明霞郡主诞下了两人的孩子后便离开了中原，有情人不得长相厮守。
